LANDFILL AND WASTE
Responsible Management
What We Did
-
Secured and advanced planning for a new landfill site for Kaua‘i, a complex process that required years of environmental review, planning, and coordination across agencies.
-
Improved refuse transfer stations across the island, including upgrades in Hanalei, Kapaa, Līhu‘e, and Hanapēpē to better serve residents and manage island waste.
-
Strengthened long-term solid waste planning and management systems to prepare for Kaua‘i’s future needs.
Vision Forward
Waste management is one of the most serious long-term responsibilities for an island community. During his time as mayor, Bernard worked to secure a path forward for Kaua‘i’s next landfill, knowing how critical it would be for the island’s future.
That experience showed him how complex these issues are and how important it is to act early and plan carefully. Bernard believes Kaua‘i must continue working toward responsible, long-term waste solutions that protect the island’s environment while ensuring the community has the infrastructure it needs.
With the right leadership, coordination, and persistence, he believes Kaua‘i can move forward again on sustainable waste management solutions that serve the island well into the future.
