Bernard Carvalho Jr. grew up on Kaua‘i in a local family that cared for the island and the people in it. A proud graduate of Kapa‘a High School, he learned early that success comes from discipline, teamwork, and showing up for others.

His talent on the football field earned him a scholarship to the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, where he studied communications and public relations. Bernard later played in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins. That experience strengthened his core foundation that, to this day, continue to shape his approach to public service.

After his football career, Bernard returned home to Kaua‘i to serve his community and raise his family. He began working in county government and quickly became known for his dedication and ability to bring people together to get things done.

His work focused on strengthening programs that support local families, youth, and seniors. Through these roles, he developed a clear understanding of how government decisions are made and how they affect everyday life on an island. His successes are numerous and they span all of Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau.

In 2008, during a difficult moment following the sudden loss of Mayor Bryan Baptiste, the people of Kaua‘i elected Bernard to lead the county.

Over the next ten years he became the longest-serving mayor in Kaua‘i's history and successfully led with steadiness, humility, and a deep commitment that is still revered and remembered today.

Many of the improvements, partnerships, and programs that serve Kaua‘i and Ni‘ihau to this day were created and strengthened during his time as Mayor. His leadership is still seen, known, and felt.

Family is the center of life for Bernard. He and his wife Regina have been married for over 40 years and raised three children, Bronson, Brennen, and Brittney, and are proud grandparents to six grandchildren.

‘Ohana has always meant "home base" for Bernard. It's where generational values are formed. Where responsibility is carried out through the little and big things. And most of all where the future begins.

Decisions we make about our land and our communities will determine whether our children and grandchildren can continue to call Kaua‘i home.

Bernard believes the future of Kaua‘i is shaped by what we choose to care for today. Stewardship of this island, its land, its people, its culture, and way of life cannot be left to chance.

What we protect, strengthen, and respect now will determine the Kaua‘i that future generations inherit.

The goal is simple. Leave Kaua‘i so well cared for that the next generation cannot help but love it, protect it, and carry that responsibility forward.
