Stewardship of Kaua‘i
Caring for What Makes Kaua‘i Special
What We Did
• Advanced Kaua‘i Nui Kuapapa, reconnecting stewardship of the island to the traditional moku and ahupua‘a land management system, bringing cultural knowledge and modern planning together to guide how we care for land and water.
• Supported the restoration of Kaneiolouma Heiau and cultural complex in Poʻipū, helping return an important cultural site to active community use.
• Protected and supported the Hanapēpē Salt Ponds, one of the last traditional Hawaiian salt-making places in the islands.
• Strengthened river and stream maintenance programs across Kaua‘i to reduce flooding risks and improve watershed management.
• Supported community partnerships focused on environmental stewardship, cultural preservation, and mālama ʻāina.
Vision Forward
Bernard believes caring for Kaua‘i requires both vision and responsibility. The island’s land, water, and cultural places are not simply resources, they are the foundation of community life.
His experience has shown that stewardship works best when modern planning is guided by the wisdom of place. By continuing to integrate the moku system of land stewardship, strengthening watershed protection, and supporting community-led mālama ʻāina efforts, Kaua‘i can protect what makes the island special while ensuring it remains strong and vibrant for the generations who will follow.
